Following the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Florida Public Records Law, citizens are given the right to view and inspect criminal records, including mugshots. This is helpful for people to maintain awareness about public safety and make informed decisions.
This step-by-step resource provides an overview on how to effectively access mugshots in Leon County, Florida.
Looking Up Free Mugshots in Leon County
Under the Florida Public Records Law and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), citizens are allowed to view public records – including criminal records – but with some exceptions such as expunged or sealed data and juvenile information.1, 2
Mugshots are generally available to the public and can mainly be found through various law enforcement agencies. In Leon County, such records can be viewed through the sheriff’s office and local police departments where inmate and booking information are recorded. On the other hand, Florida’s corrections and law enforcement departments offer databases for state prisoner mugshots.
The following sections talk about how to view mugshots through the aforementioned custodians at no cost.
How To Access Leon County Mugshots at No Cost
At the county level, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) and Leon County Detention Facility (LCDF) provide a number of ways to allow citizens to view mugshots online.
Firstly, searchers can get a view of an arrestees’ mugshot through the daily booking reports of LCDF posted on the sheriff’s office website. The reports are organized with a pdf file for each date so it would be a faster search if you know when the booking took place; otherwise, you would have to skim through each file. Once a file is selected, you can scroll through the pages or use ‘Ctrl + F’ to search for the booked individual.
Each file contains a table that displays individuals arrested by the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and Tallahassee Police Department. It has columns for the police photograph, full name, last booking date, last release date, booking type, information about whether the person is in jail or not, charges, count, and the arresting agency.
Secondly, LCDF also has an online inmate roster where the name, ethnicity, and gender of the inmate are all required to start a search. This makes it a more efficient method if you have all the required information at hand.
The initial results display basically the same information as the booking reports (photo, name, last arrest and release date, jail status, charges, and arresting agency). However, if you view more information you will also see the inmate’s System Person Number (SPN), age, sex, race, weight and height, eye and hair colors, aliases, and both the past and current charges, including the bond amounts.
A third option is the warrant search tool of LCSO’s judicial services where at least a last name is needed to initiate a lookup.4 The table of results show the offender’s photo, name, birthdate, and charges. Selecting the ‘Details’ button will let you see more information similar to that of the inmate roster – except instead of past and current charges, the listed information is about current warrants.
Another source would be the LCSO’s Most Wanted page where mugshots of the most wanted individuals are displayed with their names, race, gender, height, weight, and birthdate.5 More information also includes the selected individual’s eye and hair colors, address, and crime type.

Mugshots found via the local city police department and county sheriff’s office are limited to the inmates in their custody. If you would like to find mugshots for state prisoners, you would have to extend your search to statewide and federal resources, as discussed in the section below.
How To View State & Federal Prison Mugshots in Florida
County-level resources may not show state prison mugshots even if the inmate used to live in the area, but they can be viewed through state agencies.
In Florida, mugshots of state prisoners can be accessed through the Department of Corrections’ offender network which requires at least a last name to return results.10 There are also other databases dedicated for escapees, released inmates, absconders, and supervised individuals.
For federal prisoners, information can be gathered by providing the inmate’s name or BOP number to the online inmate locator of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). However, mugshots are not shown in the results.
Interested parties may browse the tutorial on looking up inmate data in Florida for more in-depth information.
Public access to mugshots at the city, county, and state levels in Florida is possible because of the state Public Records Law and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).1, 2 These laws give the public the right to inspect and request copies of records with the exception of expunged or sealed data, juvenile cases, and any information that may help identify victims or confidential informants.
With access to these public records, citizens are advised to refrain from using the information to cause harm or discrimination. In addition, to oversee the proper use of said public records in the workplace, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) are put in place.
If you’re interested in looking up local inmate information, a Leon County mugshot search can give relevant results, but it is important to understand the limitations and responsibilities that come with accessing these records.
